  • Halloween is celebrated on Maundy (Holy) Thursday just before Easter and has been celebrated in Sweden only since the 1990s. Children and teenagers mainly dress up for fancy parties and ghost parties, light lanterns, and venture forth to scare their neighbours and trick-or-treat.

  • The Swedish monarchy is one of the oldest in the world. It dates back a thousand years and has included 11 dynasties, with the current one, the House of Bernadotte, ruling the longest.

  • Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was the first of his line on the Swedish throne. He was born in France in 1763 and was named heir to the throne in 1810. He changed his name to Carl XIV Johan. The Swedish royal family is related to all the reigning royal courts of Europe.

  • Sweden has 95,700 lakes larger than 100 meters by 100 meters. That equals 9% of Sweden’s total area.

  • There’s a golf club situated on the border of Sweden and Finland, half the holes are in one country and half in the other.

  • The band Abba wore ridiculous outfits to avoid Sweden's taxes, which allowed deductions for clothing if it wasn't meant to be used every day.

  • For seven years the official Twitter account of @Sweden was given to a random citizen every week to manage.

  • Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is built on 14 islands, and the city centre is virtually situated on the water.

  • Sweden is a member of the European Union but has its own currency, the krona, or Swedish crown.

  • Fika is a coffee break that normally consists of coffee or tea, cookies or sweet buns, but can also include soft drinks, fruit and sandwiches. It is a social institution and an important part of the national culture.

  • As of 2006, Sweden was the most generous country in the world regarding aid to poor countries. It is the only nation where donations exceed 1% of the GDP.
